FCS Curriculum

No curriculum will fulfill the needs of our students without Christ and the devoted teachers He has prepared for FCS. Our teacher selection process is therefore intentionally detailed and lengthy. FCS selects the books and other necessary tools that the staff believes will best meet the needs of our student body. FCS uses a variety of curricula that are reevaluated each year to consider new materials or improvements.

The elementary curriculum is designed to help the student grow as a Christian by teaching Biblical truths and precepts, and to mature the student academically by emphasizing basic subject skills. The teachers make the curriculum come alive by adding projects, reading material, hands on activities and other supplemental materials.

Math: The elementary grades currently use Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) curriculum, which uses math manipulatives such as pattern blocks, geoboards, and counting tiles to help teach math concepts.

Reading/Language Arts: The lower elementary grades (4K-2nd) use Sing, Spell Read and Write materials to teach reading, phonics, handwriting and spelling skills. It offers a series of colorful, interesting books for each child to read, music to learn phonic sounds to, and other reinforcements. Cursive writing is taught in 2nd grade. The upper elementary grades (3-5th) use The Shurley Method for Language Arts. It teaches the parts of speech by using jingles. The third grade uses the Bob Jones Basil readers. 4th-5th grades use novels to teach reading.

Science: ACSI curriculum is used to teach science. It approaches science from a creationist viewpoint. This curriculum uses lots of hands-on experiments to teach the fundamentals: life, physical, and earth science.

History: History is taught from A Beka Books and various other curricula and supplemental materials in a unit approach method. Geography is highlighted as well.

Electives: Music, Art and Physical Education use a variety of materials. Musical programs and/or plays are performed each year. Computer keyboarding is taught.

Field Trips

Teachers may schedule fun and educational field trips for their classes. They will send home an informational letter to notify parents of pertinent details for each trip.

Homework

Each teacher is at liberty to give homework to aid students' advancement in their studies.

Each student is required to keep an assignment pad and to complete his/her homework
assignments. Students will receive an assignment pad from the School Office. Students are encouraged to do all for the glory of God.
practice, class preparation, reinforcement, and remediation: Homework provides the
students with drill, practice, review of material, and background information that
prepares them to participate in future classroom activities and discussions.

However, homework is only given when necessary as children need to be free to enjoy other activites at home.
